Last month, Riot’s Esports Technology Group aimed to take its use of JPEG XS to the next level during the back-to-back League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) and Valorant Champions Tour (VCT) Masters Reykjavík events in Iceland — its first in-person events since LoL World Championships in Shanghai in October.

“Originally,” says Scott Adametz, head of Esports Technology Group, Riot Games, “we were planning on this being a test [of JPEG XS] for Iceland; it wasn’t planned to be used for the actual production paths. But the technology worked so well in the test, and we became comfortable enough to decide, the week before the show went on-air, to use it for the live production. XS ended up solving some needs we didn’t even realize we had with regards to transmission delay.”

For many in the industry, the JPEG XS standard represents the next great leap forward in transmission. The codec delivers high-quality compression with ratios up to 10:1 at sub-millisecond latency, and compressed video can be transported using SMPTE ST 2110-22 over WAN (wide-area network). Riot Games’ broadcast team had been using JPEG2000 for several years but has found a wealth of new possibilities for remote production and ultra-fast transmission with JPEG XS, according to Adametz.

For this event, more than 120 Nevion Virtuosos were used for the live 4K broadcast to billions of viewers via CMG’s China Central Television’s (CCTV) television station and website, as well as 70 4K movie theaters.

Nevion Virtuosos ensured the reliable TICO encoding and decoding of all 4K/UHD signals in Tiananmen Square from OB vans, on-site cameras in buildings and microwave links from vehicles and helicopters. The compressed signals were then transported between two master control rooms, four 4K studios and CCTV’s 4K playout system at different sites as 3G-SDI TICO streams using Nevion’s fiber transmitters and receivers.

4K PGM signals were also encoded by Nevion Virtuoso using lightweight TICO compression technology and sent back to two ultra-large LED screens in Tiananmen Square to provide real-time pictures for the audience on site.

The flow of production of this event required three encoding-decoding cycles for each 4K/UHD signal. Nevion Virtuoso TICO delivered a reliable performance achieving low latency for the repeated coding and decoding, and ensured that an outstanding picture quality was maintained despite the complex flow of production.

Hans Hasselbach, Chief Commercial Officer, Nevion, commented: “We are proud to have been part of the world’s first large-scale TICO application and to have facilitated CMG’s broadcast of the celebrations from the momentous day across China. Option modules for receiving compressed or uncompressed video from IP or SDI (Optical and Electrical) are readily available. With backplane latency of less than 1ms, universal applicability for virtually any video application is ensured, as is the implementation of both current and future IP video standards, including VSF-TR03, VSF-TR04 and SMPTE2110.

Appear TV’s X20 is ideal for VAR as it fulfills the highly demanding requirements for this application. The need for high-quality video with low latency is crucial for the referees to verify calls made on the field.
