For this event, more than 120 Nevion Virtuosos were used for the live 4K broadcast to billions of viewers via CMG’s China Central Television’s (CCTV) television station and website, as well as 70 4K movie theaters.

Nevion Virtuosos ensured the reliable TICO encoding and decoding of all 4K/UHD signals in Tiananmen Square from OB vans, on-site cameras in buildings and microwave links from vehicles and helicopters. The compressed signals were then transported between two master control rooms, four 4K studios and CCTV’s 4K playout system at different sites as 3G-SDI TICO streams using Nevion’s fiber transmitters and receivers.

4K PGM signals were also encoded by Nevion Virtuoso using lightweight TICO compression technology and sent back to two ultra-large LED screens in Tiananmen Square to provide real-time pictures for the audience on site.

The flow of production of this event required three encoding-decoding cycles for each 4K/UHD signal. Nevion Virtuoso TICO delivered a reliable performance achieving low latency for the repeated coding and decoding, and ensured that an outstanding picture quality was maintained despite the complex flow of production.

Hans Hasselbach, Chief Commercial Officer, Nevion, commented: “We are proud to have been part of the world’s first large-scale TICO application and to have facilitated CMG’s broadcast of the celebrations from the momentous day across China. This is defined by the ST 2022-6 where the SDI signal, consisting of video, audio and ancillary data in one package, is simply mapped onto IP. Here the original TICO-RDD35 (standardized by the SMPTE) comes into play. By compressing at 4:1 it allows the transport of 4K - instead of just HD over a single 3G-SDI or even mapping multiple 4K streams onto 10Gb Ethernet. This allowed the industry to keep their existing infrastructures, while still upgrading to UHD resolutions.

From 2017 we started looking at step 2: Elementary flows. Thanks to SMPTE’s ST2110 there is no more packaged SDI stream. Video, audio, and ancillary data are sent separately over IP, leading to much greater flexibility. Hence, we have a separate video stream to be compressed. Even more now, we are also facing an addition to ST 2110. Namely part 22 – specifically defining IP transport for compressed essence. This created a new use case for which we were looking to deploy a more suitable codec. And that is why we came up with a new TICO product family member: “TICO XS”

However, with increased compression efficiency. Depending on your content, we can compress down to 1 bit per pixel and you won’t witness any quality loss. In bitrate this means compressing a 4K60 stream down to somewhere between 1,6 Gbps or even 500 Mbps. On top, it still keeps the properties that we all love about TICO RDD35 - virtually no latency, a very low complexity, and an extremely low power consumption.

About the same time SMPTE ST2110 was coming up, the JPEG committee announced a call for proposals for a new lightweight compression standard, called JPEG XS. TICO was submitted and actually selected as the baseline for further development. After that, intoPIX’s engineers (working together with other JPEG committee members) used the original TICO-RDD35 as a basis to develop JPEG XS

So TICO-XS is in fact compliant with the upcoming ISO standard JPEG XS - a very important step for simple, industry-wide adoption

Summed up, you’re working with SDI or hybrid SDI/IP networks and want to upgrade to UHD?

TICO RDD35 is your solution! If you’re looking for higher compression efficiency, especially relevant for ST2110 systems? TICO-XS is your go-to option.

Therefore TICO XS is not replacing TICO, it’s merely an evolution that goes along with the technological development in the media industry. And best of all, it’s ISO standardized as JPEG XS!

During broadcasted sporting events, video footage of an incident is reviewed by the VAR, who then advises the referee on what the video is showing so that a more accurate, on-the-spot decision can be made. For football, this typically ranges from scoring plays/goals, penalties, red cards and mistaken identity, and serves as an added tool to relook at the play or incident to ensure the correct call was made on the field.

At the reception site, the X20 system decodes the signals for further analysis. Some of these signals are then encoded in the same chassis and sent back to the OB vans.

“We are very proud to be delivering a solution with unique characteristics that is re-defining video delivery in the contribution segment,” says Sergio Renteria, Sales Director at Appear TV. “Multi-camera video alignment, multiple codec and format support, and a rich variety of input and output interfaces enable our clients to satisfy several requirements, such as delivery of UHD services and transition to IP workflows, all of which have an increasing demand in the years to come.”

The X20, part of Appear TV’s X-Series line that includes the X10 and X20, supports “lightweight” intra-codecs (JPEG2000 & TICO) as well as AVC and HEVC. Option modules for receiving compressed or uncompressed video from IP or SDI (Optical and Electrical) are readily available. With backplane latency of less than 1ms, universal applicability for virtually any video application is ensured, as is the implementation of both current and future IP video standards, including VSF-TR03, VSF-TR04 and SMPTE2110.

Appear TV’s X20 is ideal for VAR as it fulfills the highly demanding requirements for this application. With its unique offering of channel density and ability to combine encoding and decoding of multiple contribution formats in the same chassis, the X-Series delivers excellent video quality in a redundant architecture to ensure the highest availability. The need for high-quality video with low latency is crucial for the referees to verify calls made on the field. With the X-Series, content can be sent to the referee monitors immediately following capture allowing them to make the right call, and not hold up game play.

Appear’s X-Series line is a high-capacity, ultra-low latency platform designed to address the latest challenges facing the distribution and contribution market.
